Religion, Literature, Art, Architecture, Traditions and Cultural Practices: An Interdisciplinary Review of Indian Cultural Heritage

Abstract

Indian cultural heritage has developed through continuous interaction among religion, literature,
visual and performing arts, architecture, customary traditions, ritual practices and community-
based knowledge systems. These dimensions cannot be understood as isolated cultural categories
because religious beliefs have influenced literary production, artistic representation, architectural
forms, festivals, food practices, dress, music, dance, pilgrimage and systems of social memory. At
the same time, literature, art and architecture have preserved, interpreted and transformed religious
and cultural meanings across historical periods. This review examines the interrelationship
between religion, literature, art, architecture, traditions and cultural practices within the Indian
cultural landscape, with particular attention to continuity, adaptation, cultural exchange and
contemporary transformation. Scholarly literature from interdisciplinary fields including history,
religious studies, anthropology, architecture, literature, art history, heritage studies and cultural
studies was examined to identify major analytical themes. Existing scholarship demonstrates that
sacred architecture functions as both a religious space and a repository of artistic, political and
social memory; literary traditions transmit philosophical ideas and collective identities; visual and
performing arts translate religious narratives into accessible cultural forms; and festivals and
customary practices provide mechanisms through which heritage is reproduced within
communities. Research also indicates increasing pressures from urbanisation, commodification,
tourism, migration, digital transformation and changing patterns of religious participation. The
review proposes an integrated cultural-heritage framework linking belief systems, textual
traditions, material culture, built heritage, performance, ritual practice and community memory.
