Abstract

Women played a significant role in the political, social and cultural history of Tamil Nadu,
particularly during the struggle against colonial rule. However, their contributions have often
received less attention than those of prominent male leaders, resulting in gaps in the historical
representation of women’s agency. This review article examines the historical contributions of
women freedom fighters in Tamil Nadu through a cultural perspective, focusing on the relationship
between women, heritage and resistance. It explores the participation of women in armed
resistance, nationalist movements, civil disobedience, social reform, economic resistance and
community mobilisation. Particular attention is given to figures such as Velu Nachiyar, Kuyili,
Rukmini Lakshmipathi, V. R. Ambujammal and other women whose contributions demonstrate
diverse forms of political and social agency. The review also examines the importance of Tamil
literature, folk traditions, oral histories, women’s journals, commemorative practices and
community memory in preserving and reconstructing women’s historical experiences. A cultural
approach reveals that women’s resistance was not limited to formal political activities but was also
expressed through everyday practices, cultural identity and collective mobilisation. The article
further identifies limitations in conventional male-centred historiography and highlights the
importance of recovering lesser-known women through regional archives, oral histories and
interdisciplinary research. The review argues that reconstructing women’s contributions through
cultural heritage provides a more inclusive understanding of Tamil Nadu’s anti-colonial history. It
also demonstrates that the legacy of women freedom fighters remains relevant to contemporary
discussions of women’s empowerment, historical memory, gender equality and cultural
preservation.
