Rural transformation and economic diversification are key drivers of regional development,
particularly in a rapidly evolving economy like Tamil Nadu. Over the past few decades, rural areas
in Tamil Nadu have undergone significant structural changes, transitioning from agriculture-based
economies to more diversified systems involving non-farm activities, services, and small-scale
industries. This review-based study examines district-level trends in rural transformation and
economic diversification using secondary data and existing literature. The study highlights
variations across districts in terms of occupational shifts, income patterns, and sectoral
contributions. It further discusses the role of infrastructure, education, government policies, and
industrial growth in shaping rural transformation. The findings provide insights into the dynamics
of rural change and emphasize the need for balanced and inclusive development strategies.
