Abstract

Seed dispersal is a fundamental ecological process that maintains plant diversity, forest
regeneration, and ecosystem stability in tropical forests. Among vertebrate dispersers, fruit bats
play a major role in transporting seeds across large distances, thereby contributing significantly to
tropical forest dynamics. The present study investigates bat-mediated seed dispersal mechanisms
in tropical forest ecosystems with emphasis on feeding behaviour, seed dispersal patterns, habitat
utilization, and ecological significance. Field observations were conducted in tropical forest
margins, semi-evergreen vegetation, orchards, and fragmented forest habitats to examine the
interaction between fruit bats and fruit-bearing plant species.
The results revealed that fruit bats preferentially consumed fruits of fig, mango, guava, banana,
and jamun trees due to their high sugar content and nutritional value. Seeds were dispersed either
through defecation during flight or by dropping partially eaten fruits beneath feeding roosts. Long
distance nocturnal movement enabled bats to transport seeds away from parent trees, thereby
reducing seedling competition and increasing plant colonization in disturbed habitats. Seasonal
variations strongly influenced feeding intensity and seed dispersal activity, with maximum
dispersal occurring during summer and monsoon seasons.
The study further demonstrated that bat-mediated seed dispersal promotes forest regeneration,
ecological succession, and restoration of degraded landscapes. Seeds dispersed by bats showed
higher germination success in open habitats and forest gaps. However, habitat destruction,
urbanization, and reduction of fruit-bearing vegetation negatively affected bat populations and
seed dispersal efficiency.
The findings highlight the ecological importance of fruit bats as keystone species in tropical
forests. Conservation of roosting habitats, native fruiting trees, and ecological corridors is essential
for maintaining sustainable seed dispersal processes and biodiversity conservation. The study
emphasizes the critical role of bats in preserving tropical forest ecosystems and supporting long
term ecological resilience.
