MIRACLE AND REALITY: A SOCIOLOGICAL READING OF ASIF CURRIMBHOY'S THE MIRACLE SEED

The Miracle Seed (1973) by Asif Currimbhoy is one of the most important one-act
dramas in Indian English drama that depicts the adverse conditions of rural India in the midst
of the devastating drought in Maharashtra in 1972. The play The Miracle Seed explores the
lives of impoverished farmers who are fighting against the famine, poverty, corruption and
empty promises of modernization in their lives at the hands of the government. Ram and his
family's experience in the play The Miracle Seed shows how social institutions (government,
family, religion, agriculture) affect human life. This paper makes a sociological study of the
play, indicating how the failure of institutions exacerbates human suffering and how hope and
resilience keep social life alive. The study contends that The Miracle Seed is not just a play
about drought; it is also a critical examination of social inequity and institutional neglect.
