Patterns of Vocabulary Learners Strategies Employed by Saudi EFL Learners

Abstract

Vocabulary learning is essential for EFL learners. EFL learners face difficulties to learn new English vocabulary. The researchers of this study deal with the strategies of vocabulary learning among students at Prince Sattam Bin Abdul Aziz University (AL-Aflaj Branch). The researchers of this study used Schmitt (1997) questionnaire. The number of students who participated in the questionnaire were150 students majoringin English Language and Literature. Five sub-categories have been used in this study. The results of the study showed that the most strategies used by the students are metacognitive strategy. At the same time, it was seen that determination strategies are less common for applying vocabulary learning strategies (VLSs) among students. The results also showed statistically significant differences in the use of VLSs attributed to gender.
