Abstract

The code-mixing research in children's names in Mandailing Natal Regency aims to discover Arabic words that are paired with the Mandailing dialect (DM). The long-term goal of this research is to acquire knowledge which will lead to information proliferation for Indonesian; especially the Mandailing Natal community. This highlights Arabic as a language that is able to be tied with the Mandailing dialect in forming a name of one's identity. The research is a qualitative descriptive study and data collection used was attentive observation method. The method used in exposing data aims at describing existing data clearly and systematically about mixing codes on people's names in Mandailing Natal District. The approach used in this study is sociolinguistic approach that focuses on social studies that reveal the form of factors and functions of code mixing in the names of people in Mandailing Natal Regency. In this research, theories and concepts of code mixing are used. This research found that there is an outer code mixing that is the existence of Arabic vocabulary combined with the Mandailing dialect in the names of people in Mandailing Natal Regency. There is also an inter code mixing that is the existence of Mandailing dialect vocabulary joined with Arabic language in the names of people in Mandailing Natal Regency.
