Abstract

Peer influence or peer pressure is the influence exerted by a peer group, observers, or person to encourage others to change attitudes, values, or behaviors with the goal of conforming to group norms. Social groups affected include groups with membership in which individuals are "formally" members (such as peers in a single school) or a social group in which the definition of membership is not clear. The person affected by peer pressure may want and may not want to belong to these groups, and it may also distinguish distorted groups with which they do not wish to be associated and thus behave opposite their behaviors.
