Abstract

The need to provide products with best quality at best price is the need of the hour. The MSME (Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises) companies strive to meet this demand, but are challenged with various defects that are identified only at the checking stage. The study aims to identify the defects in a sewing line and reduce the defect percentage by implementing six sigma based on DMAIC methodology. The project was carried out in an apparel manufacturing industry manufacturing women's t-shirt; a sewing line was selected for the study. The study bought to light the reason and solution for majority of the defects. The techniques used for the study includes creating awareness among workers, line wise checking system, colour card tag line system, no of end points to be trimmed for a style and frequent inspection on checking person. The application of these techniques had reduced the defect percentage by 3 percent.
