Abstract

Lean manufacturing and Six Sigma are accepted worldwide for increasing organizational efficiency, especially in apparel industries. Tiruppur, a small town in South India, is one of the global destinations for buyers to manufacture quality knit garments. Articles have been published on implementing Lean manufacturing and Six Sigma in very few industries of Tiruppur. This article analyzes the awareness of Lean manufacturing and Six Sigma among Tiruppur garment exporters and whether Tiruppur industries are adapting to the modernization of global apparel manufacturing trends. This empirical study uses a questionnaire to collect data from the targeted group. Analyzing the responses shows that most of the Tiruppur MSMEs were aware of Lean manufacturing and Six Sigma. But only a few industries have deployed them and have achieved satisfactory results. Most of the non-implementers of both Lean manufacturing and Six Sigma have shown a positive attitude towards implementing these practices in their industry in the future.
