Abstract

Palliative care helps in improving patient satisfaction and symptom management and also reduces costs of hospitals for severe ill patients. Surgical illness is considered as acute and sometimes life ending and may cause further suffering. Hence, surgical patients need significant palliative care. Although, significance of palliative attention for clinical patients is not well-defined and focused properly. Hence, this study focuses on highlighting and characterizing palliative care interventions in surgical setting at pre and post-operative care levels. Systematic review has been conducted and models were suggested for introducing and improving palliative care for surgical patients. Outcomes of the study propose that palliative attention should be provided to surgical patients at an early stage of treatment to facilitate decision making process and assists in improving patients' satisfaction and quality of care.
