Pragmatic Analysis of Motive Using Flouting Maxim by the Characters of the Little Women Movie in terms of Leech's Illocutionary Function Theory.

Abstract

This research aims to identify the type of flouting maxims found in the Little Women movie directed. It is also aimed to investigate the motives of the flouting maxims performed by the characters. The leading theory used in this research is the pragmatic analysis of flouting maxims using Grice's theory, while the theory to find out the motives used by the characters in using those flouting maxims is the Illocutionary Function theory from Leech. The methodology applied in this research is qualitative descriptive research in an effort to present the data descriptively. The primary data were collected from the transcription of the movie script. The results of this research show that there are 14 cases of flouting maxim of quantity (32,5%), 7 cases of flouting maxim of quality (16,3%), 21 cases of flouting relation (48,8%) and 1 case of flouting maxim of manner (2,3%). While for the motives, there are found four motives in using the flouting maxims, 7 cases of competitive (16,3%), 6 cases of convivial (13,9%), 20 cases of collaborative (46,5%) and 10 cases of conflictive (23,2%).
