Problems of Inter-State Border Conflict in North East India: A Special Study on Conflict between Assam & Mizoram

Abstract

The history of humankind is the history of conflict. Conflict is an important part of our day-to-day life as well as a common phenomenon of national and international politics. Conflict can be described as a serious disagreement or clash of interest between two or more persons or groups or states. The landscape of the contemporary world is characterized by several internal conflicts based on water, oil, land border, etc. The border conflict is a type of conflict that exists among countries almost all over the world. As with International border conflict, the North-Eastern region of India is also victim by the inter-state border conflict from the very beginning. Several inter-state border conflicts took place in the North Eastern region after the recognition of separate statehood to Nagaland, Mizoram, Meghalaya, and Arunachal Pradesh curving out from greater Assam. Currently, Assam has border disputes with each of them, which are the date back to the British Colonial era. These inter-state border disputes are mainly responsible for breaking down the unity and integrity of North East India as well as the inter-state peace process of this region. As with the other inter-state border conflicts in North East India, such as Assam-Nagaland, Assam- Meghalaya, and Assam-Arunachal Pradesh, the Assam Mizoram inter-state border conflict is also witnessed the long-standing inter-state conflict in North East India. In this particular research paper, try to analyze the nature of inter-state border conflict in North East India special focusing on the causes and consequences of inter-state border conflict between Assam and Mizoram. Moreover, this paper is also trying to examine some important remedial measures for tackle down of these issues.
