Analysis of News Articles on Dating Abuse Using the Topic Modeling Technique

Abstract

The objective of this study is to explore the keywords and also to examine their inherent intention within news articles on dating abuse according to political tendency by using the topic modeling technique. After selecting total 518 articles including 286 articles of conservative newspapers (Chosun Ilbo, Joongang Ilbo, Dong-A Ilbo) and 232 articles of progressive newspapers (Hankyoreh Newspaper, Kyunghyang Shinmun) reported from January 1st 2016 to December 31st 2020, this study explored differences in topics using the topic modeling based on LDA (Latent Dirichlet Allocation). In the results of topic modeling analysis, the common topics of dating abuse between conservative newspapers and progressive newspapers were the improvement of social perception and strengthening the protection of victims. The topics of conservative newspapers were the perception of dating abuse, hate crime, and violation of a right to sexual self-determination while the topics of progressive newspapers were the spread of sexual image without consent, damage from cyber violence, and strong legislation, which showed differences in topics. This study implies some differences in the ideological orientation of newspapers about dating abuse.
