Abstract

The present study deals with semantic-pragmatic contrastive analysis of irony that leads to satire in both English and Arabic languages that occurred directly or indirectly. Semantically, by the connotation and denotation meaning of the word that means the context or situation around the word. pragmatically, by violating the cooperative principles with such strategies. In addition, this study tries to explain that there are fundamental similarities and dissimilarities between English and Arabic satirical expressions, and these are investigated through making a comparison in both languages and through analyzing Shakespeare's Hamlet and AL Mutanabbi's poems which are called ' kafuriat'.
