Abstract

The challenges of sustainable development increasingly concentrate in cities since the urbanization in the world continues and governments should implement policies to ensure advantages of urban growths are sustainably shared. When more people move into cities, the intimate contact with nature is lost in that the nature has not always been a priority in the urban planning history. Therefore, this study investigates the relationship between green space, cultural and economic aspects and urban planning. It adopts the quantitative approach for selecting and analyzing the data of the study. A total of 550 employees who have the responsibility to establish new green spaces and have also a plan to expand green spaces in Al-Madinah Al-Munawarah were considered as the population of the study. The sample of the study also consisted of 231 employees who answered the questionnaire of the study. The collected data was analyzed quantitatively through SPSS. The findings of the study revealed that the degree of the existence of urban expansion patterns in Al-Madinah Al-Munawarah is high. It is also shown that the requirements of modeling green spaces, economic and cultural aspects for urban planning are available in the urban planning with very high, medium and low degrees, respectively. The study recommends that the concerned authorities should work on developing cities by creating urban green spaces and should also increase the budget allocated to designing green spaces in Al-Madinah Al-Munawarah.
