Abstract

  • The purpose was to identify the double mediating effect of satisfactory relationships with children and self-esteem on the effect of satisfaction with income and with life by divorced Korean elderly, To this end, we used the data on 286 divorced elderly aged 60 years and over among the data for the 14th year of the Korean Welfare Panel. First, there was no difference in satisfaction with life of the elderly according to socio-demographic characteristics. The divorced elderly in Korean society have the collective characteristics of the divorced elderly, rather than differences in gender, age, educational background, and religion that the married elderly have. Second, the divorced elderly people in Korea were very satisfied with life and had good self-esteem, but were not satisfied with income or with their relationships with their children. Third, there were differences in income satisfaction, child relationship satisfaction, self-esteem, and life satisfaction according to the socio-demographic characteristics of the divorced elderly. Overall, healthy divorced elderly had high income satisfaction, and healthy and living in rural areas showed high satisfaction with child relationship satisfaction, self-esteem, and life satisfaction. Forth, in the effect of satisfaction with income on satisfaction with life, we verified the double mediating effect of satisfactory relationships with children and self-esteem.
